Four 2016 Rio Olympics canoe and kayak sprint competitions came to a close on Friday, with some familiar names grabbing some medals.
Four events in the 2016 Rio Olympics canoe and kayak competition finished up on Thursday: the Men’s kayak double 200m; the Men’s canoe single 200m; the Men’s kayak double 200m; and the Women’s kayak single 500m. Eight of the 12 canoe and kayak sprint events are now finished, with four more preliminaries and semifinals set for Friday.

The German team of Max Rendschmidt and Marcus Gross had the second fastest time during the preliminary run on Wednesday, earning an automatic spot in Thursday’s final. Serbia’s team of Mark Tomicevic and Milenk Zoric actually had the fastest time on Wednesday, but wound up finishing with silver, while Australia’s Ken Wallace and Lachlan Tame took the bronze.

Brazil’s Isaquias Quieroz dos Santos, who many expected to take the gold, finished in the bronze position. Azerbaijan’s Valentin Demyankenko won the silver medal, beating out dos Santos by 0.13s.

The final event of the day had arguably the biggest name in the sport, as New Zealand’s Lisa Carrington was looking to pick up the gold medal in the Women’s kayak single 500m. Carrington already won the gold in the 200m event, and was a favorite to win the 500m. However, Hungary’s Danuta Kozak was too good, taking the gold medal on Thursday. Carrington had to settle for a bronze medal, as Denmark’s Emma Jorgensen took the silver.
