Olympics Women’s Basketball Semifinal: Spain vs Serbia
Coming into the knockout rounds of the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball competition, it felt like everyone could see how things would play out. We seemed destined for a Team USA vs Australia final and that would be that. However, Serbia had other plans and spoiled that possibility. Now it’s wide open in women’s hoops from Rio, which raises the intrigue level substantially heading into the Spain vs Serbia semifinal matchup on Day 13 Wednesday.
Serbia pulled off the upset of the silver medal favorites in Australia in shocking fashion on Tuesday afternoon. Ana Dabovic and Jelena Milovanovic that led the way to the 73-71 victory and pushed them into the semifinals where they’ll now have a shot at a medal. However, if they want a shot at even more glory and a gold medal on Saturday, they’ll need Dabovic, Milovanovic, and Sanja Petrovic to show up at the same level on Thursday afternoon vs Spain.
Speaking of Spain, they themselves were almost upset in the quarterfinals, going down to the wire against a feisty Turkish squad. However, Laura Nicholls and Anna Cruz led the way for the Spanish team and came through in the big moments when it mattered. They’ll need to play like the more composed veteran team against Serbia on Thursday to avoid suffering the same fate as Australia.
