As sad as it is, only four more matches remain in the Olympics women’s handball competition from Rio 2016. Day 13 on Thursday, August 18 will host to the two semifinal matchups in women’s handball. After an absolutely wild preliminary round and then some high drama playing out in the quarterfinals, you shouldn’t expect anything less than a thrill from each of these semifinal matchups.
Starting at 2:30 p.m. ET for the first semifinal matchup, Netherlands will be taking on France. Netherlands advanced out of the quarters by beating the host nation and dark horse favorite Brazil handily. France on the other hand had to go down to the wire to outlast a talented Spanish team. Both teams, though, have proven that they can hold their own in a war on the handball court, which is good because that’s sure to be the narrative for Thursday’s semifinal.
The defending gold medalists in Norway will take on Russia in the other semifinal on Thursday and this match could be everything the first one offers in more. Norway stumbled early in their gold medal defense in pool play, but have been turning on the jets as of late. Russia on the other hand has also been on a bit of a hot streak. Subsequently, these two streaking teams colliding could make for a combustable, highly entertaining matchup on Thursday.
