What would Ryan Lochte do? Maintain his innocence, apparently.

So far, #LochteGate is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to journalists and bloggers covering the last few days of the 2016 Rio Olympics. Need a story and not sure what to write? Just wait for the latest turn in the possible-robbery-but-maybe-made-up-story featuring Ryan Lochte and three other Team USA swimmers.

We know the saga isn’t over, because Brazilian authorities have decided to indict Lochte and teammate Jimmy Feigen for filing a false crime report. They apparently feel there was enough evidence to support the idea that the swimmers invented the holdup by armed men posing as police.

That’s not what they’re saying, though, even after the law weighed in:

Even people who have seen the video the Brazilians are using to decide what’s what can’t seem to agree on whose story is true.

That leaves us … where, exactly? Lochte is already reportedly back in the U.S., leaving the Olympics before a judge could order his passport held so he could be questioned further. He’s never wavered from his basic premise that men using badges to pose as police robbed him and three other U.S. swimmers after leaving a party, even after multiple opportunities to walk it back.

An incident at a gas station is part of the overall tapestry too. The truth could involve some parts of both events, meaning it’s quite possibly somewhere in-between the accounts of Team Lochte and Team Brazil Police.

Until the truth is finally unraveled, this has turned into one of those “grab some popcorn and settle in” situations. And who knows exactly how it will end up?
