Ryan Lochte’s fake robbery caused Twitter to burn down
By David Rouben
After it was confirmed that the Ryan Lochte robbery was fake, dank memes started pouring in.
When Ryan Lochte told reporters that he was robbed after a party in Rio, many people didn’t take his word for it. It was hard to believe he reacted to being held at gunpoint by saying “whatever,” but that wasn’t the only suspicious detail. Hours after the robbery, Lochte and the other U.S. swimmers he was with re-entered the Olympic village and acted, well, not a lot like people who had just been robbed at gunpoint. And finally, Lochte tried to run back to the States shortly after the revelations, which raised plenty more questions.

But Good Morning America finally confirmed that the story was indeed fabricated. Even though people suspected it for a long time, Twitter held nothing back when it was confirmed:
Lochte has gone from a beloved six-time Gold medalist to the Johnny Manziel of USA Swimming. He doesn’t deserve our sympathy now or ever after lying about this. If he did this just to get attention, then he clearly needs psychiatric help.
While this story is very upsetting for a lot of people, it’s times like this that we’re glad the internet is a thing. Because when something major like this breaks, we can always count on Twitter to provide us with some savage reactions and dank memes. From angry Phelps face to LochteGate, the Olympics certainly haven’t been short on entertainment value.
