Alaska

Alaska’s Mount Rushmore is admittedly difficult to put together, but it’s very strong considering the small pool of eligible candidates. The most famous athlete for Alaska? Pitcher Curt Schilling, who won the World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001 and with the Boston Red Sox in 2004 and 2007. Though he moved from Alaska before starting high school, Schilling is unquestionably Alaska’s most famous athlete.

Carlos Boozer has quietly had a pretty successful stint in the NBA, even if the highlights of his basketball career came during his days at Duke University. Born in Juneau, Boozer set Alaska high school basketball records as he led the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears to consecutive state titles.

Center Scott Gomez has had a successful NHL career, though it appears to be over after 1,079 games. Gomez was an integral part of the New Jersey Devils’ Stanley Cup victories in 2000 and 2003. He also played for the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues and Ottawa Senators.

Susan Butcher is arguably the most popular dog musher of all time. She passed away in 2006, but not before becoming the second woman to win the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1986 and the first musher ever to win the dog race four times in five years.
