LeBron James is Akron’s favorite son. His legacy in Ohio is unquestioned after he did the seemingly impossible and brought a professional sports championship to Cleveland. LeBron was born and raised in Ohio. He abandoned the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat, but eventually returned in 2014. He more than made up for his departure by delivering on his promise to bring home an NBA title.

Paul Brown coached both the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals. He won three NFL championships with the Browns. Brown also won four AAFC (All-American Football Conference) championships. He is regarded as one of the best football coaches of all time and pioneered several strategies still in use today.

Jesse Owens was the United States’ first track superstar. He famously won four gold medals in front of Adolph Hitler at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. His success did a lot to raise the profile of African-American athletes and he has become one of the most iconic sports figures of all time.

Johnny Bench is the greatest Cincinnati Reds player ever. A 14 time All-Star, Bench led the NL in home runs twice while leading his Reds to two World Series titles. Bench also won two NL MVP awards.
