Picking the Sports Mount Rushmore for all 50 states
Louisiana
There literally might not be a bigger star from Louisiana than the incomparable Shaquille O’Neal, who easily could have made it on the Mount Rushmore for two other states. O’Neal was a huge star, both figuratively and literally, and holds various records. With LSU, he nearly made the 1992 Olympic Basketball team, except Christian Laettner was picked instead. O’Neal won four NBA titles and won a National Player of the Year award with LSU.
Pete Maravich is widely considered to be one of the best shooters of all time. Pistol Pete got his start at LSU, where he was twice named the Consensus National Player of the Year (1969 and 1970). To this day, he is still the NCAA career points leader. Perhaps no one will ever touch his 40 points per game average over three years at LSU. He later played for the New Orleans Jazz (now known as the Utah Jazz).
Drew Brees is the man who brought football back to New Orleans, choosing the Saints over a number of other teams. Brees immediately made the Saints a title contender and led the team to a Super Bowl win in 2009. He is the team’s career leader in passing yards and touchdowns. Brees is heavily involved in the community as well.
Les Miles has been the face of LSU football ever since he was hired. Whether you love him or hate him, he’s one of the guys who makes college football fun. He led LSU to a national title and has a career 112-32 record with the Tigers.
