Olympic modern pentathlon August 19 results: Chloe Esposito wins gold
By John Buhler
Winning Women’s Modern Pentathlon was Australia’s Chloe Esposito, with France’s Elodie Clouvel for the silver, and Poland’s Oktawia Nowacka with the bronze.
Early Friday evening in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Women’s Modern Pentathlon competition finished with three women taking home Olympic medals in this unique five-sport event.
Crossing the finishing line second after the Combined (Shooting/Running) was Australia’s Chloe Esposito. While she finished slightly more than nine seconds of that segment’s top finisher in Lithuania’s Laura Asadauskaite, it would be Esposito that would be taking home Olympic gold in the Women’s Modern Pentathlon.
To be fair, Asadauskaite’s 12:01:01 in the Combined Running/Shooting was an Olympic record, but Esposito had the better day on Friday earning Olympic gold. Esposito was able to win the women’s modern pentathlon with a total of 1,372 points. She did fair in fencing and horse jumping but was able to achieve a first place finish on account of her great work in the pool and in the Combined Running/Shooting.
Finishing only 16 points behind Esposito for Olympic silver was France’s Elodie Clouvel with 1,356 points. Clouvel was better than Esposito in every stage of the event, but not in the Combined Running/Shooting.
Next: 50 greatest Summer Olympians in history.
Earning the bronze medal in the Women’s Modern Pentathlon was Poland’s Oktawia Nowacka. Nowacka finished only 23 points off Esposito’s mark with 1,349 points of her own. While brilliant in both fencing and the riding portion of the modern pentathlon, what kept Nowacka from earning Olympic gold was the swimming and combined running/shooting part of the competition.

Neither of the two Americans competing in the Women’s Modern Pentathlon had a spectacular day on Friday, as the Isaksen Sisters found themselves in the bottom half of the 36-women field. Margaux Isaksen finished in 20th place with a combined 1,280 points. Her sister Isabella Isaksen finished in 25th place with a combined 1,255 points.
