By Brad Weiss
Here’s everything you need to know about watching the 2016 Rio Olympics Canoe and Kayak Sprint events for Friday, August 19.
The final four canoe and kayak sprint events of the 2016 Rio Olympics begin on Friday, with preliminary and semifinal action. The four events are the men’s kayak single 200m, the men’s canoe double 1000m, the women’s kayak four 500m, and the men’s kayak four 1000m.
In the first event, the men’s kayak single 200m, the reigning gold medalist will not be competing. Ed McKeever of Great Britain is out of the 2016 event, but the other two medalists from London will be in the field. Spain’s Saul Craviotto Rivero, who took silver in 2012, has already won gold in the men’s kayak double 200m in Rio. Bronze medalist from London, Mark DeJunge of Canada, came within 0.4 seconds of gold last time, so expect him to be right there on Friday.
The men’s canoe double 1000m will be the second event of Friday, and it will feature no medal winners from the last Olympics. The team to watch is from Germany, which is the same country who took gold in London. Sebastian Brendel and Jan Vandrey head into the heats a favorite, as Brendel is arguably the best in the canoe in the world. The Serbian team is also strong, as the Tarnovschi brothers, Serghei and Oleg, will certainly be in the mix.
The final women’s event in these events will be the women’s four 500m competition, which should be Hungary’s to win. Danuta Kozak is one of the best women in the kayak in the world, and she is fresh off a women’s kayak single 500m gold on Thursday. The Canadian team anchored by Emma Jorgensen also could make some noise, so keep an eye on that foursome.
The final event of the day will be the men’s kayak four 1000m, and Portugal may have the upper hand in this competition. The four men in their kayak have the most ability of any other foursome in this event. Emanuel Silva, Fernando Pimenta, Joao Ribeiro, and David Fernandes have the best shot to taking the gold in this event on Saturday.
