The final event of the 2016 Rio Olympics diving competition starts on Friday, as the men head to the platform for the women’s 10m platform preliminary.
The 2016 Rio Olympics are coming to a close, and on Friday, the diving events begin their final competition. The last diving event in Rio will be the men’s 10m platform, and it includes some of the best male divers in the world. All three medalists from the 2012 London Olympics are returning for what should be an incredible competition.
The action gets started on Friday, as the men compete in the preliminary round. Each diver will get six dives, and must include all four groups of dives. Those groups include forward, reverse, inward, twisting, and backward.
On Friday, the competition will start with 28 divers, with ten being eliminated during the preliminary. In the semifinals, the 18 divers will again get six dives, with the final 12 advancing. The final 12 will have to execute their final six dives perfectly, as the three highest totals will receive medals.
During the 2012 London Olympics, American David Boudia stole the show. Boudia took the gold medal in London, scoring an incredible 102.80 on his last dive. It was the highest scoring dive of the competition, leading him to a 0.20 point victory.
Qiu Bo of China fell to Boudia by that margin, but he was amazing during the competition as well. His final dive also went over 100.00 points, but it was not enough to catch Boudia.
The bronze medal went to Tom Daley, who has already won bronze in Rio. Daley was a part of the Great Britain duo that won the bronze in the men’s 10m synchronized platform, so he is viewed as a favorite to win the individual event.
Three other divers to keep an eye on are Steele Johnson of the United States, who teamed with Boudia to win silver in the men’s 10m synchronized in Rio. Sascha Klein from Germany is solid in this event, as is Chen Aisen of China, who won gold in the men’s 10m synchronized platform already this Olympics.
