The 2016 Rio Olympics women’s soccer final is set. Sweden will be taking on Germany to see who will win the gold medal on Friday Aug. 19.
Sweden pulled off arguably the biggest upset in women’s soccer history when they beat the United States in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Summer Olympics Games, setting themselves up for an Olympic medal for the first time in team history. Sweden took on the home team Brazil in the semifinals to move on to the gold medal match, beating Brazil in the same fashion that they beat USA: penalty kicks.
Since 1996, the inaugural year of women’s soccer in the Olympic, there have only been two countries to ever win gold: the United States, and Norway. This will be a chance for a third team to join them in Olympic gold, with Sweden and Germany battling for one of the sport’s highest honors.
Germany won the bronze medal in 2000, 2004, and 2008, now for the first time in team history they will finish in either first or second. After a placing second behind Canada in group F, as well as losing the first match against then, Germany rallied to overcome Canada in the semifinals. Germany beat Canada with a final score of 2-0 in regulation time of the semifinals. After failing to qualify for the Olympics in 2012, Germany is on a mission to prove that they are fully back to their old selves, if not better.
