Olympics women’s golf results: Inbee Park dominating after Round 3
Results from Round 3 of the Olympics women’s golf tournament from Rio 2016 on Friday, August 19
After a 116-year drought with Olympics women’s golf not being a part of the Games, the return hasn’t disappointed. The tournament had been wildly unpredictable through the first two rounds coming into Round 3 on Friday, August 19. As you’d expect given the first two days, the third round didn’t disappoint either in regards to drama.
Lydia Ko of New Zealand was the big mover of the day. She tore up the Olympic course and moved up to second on the leaderboard after shooting a 6-under 65 on Friday. However, she still trails South Korea’s Inbee Park who has been lights out since her first tee shot at Rio 2016. After back-to-back 66s in the first two rounds, she finished Round 3 with a solid 70 to keep a hold of the overall lead heading into the final round.
As for the two Americans still relatively within striking distance, Gerina Piller submitted a fantastic Round 3 after shooting 68 on the day to tie with Ko in second place on the overall leaderboard. Stacy Lewis, however, experienced a reverse of fortunes as she shot a 76 on Friday, dropping her down into a tie for eighth-place heading into the final round and trailing Park by five strokes.
Canada’s Brooke Henderson entered the tournament as one of the favorites and looked set to make her move as well coming into Friday’s Round 3, especially after shooting a 64 on Thursday. However, she had a rough day on the links on Friday, shooting a 4-over 75 on the day and falling down the leaderboard. Another pre-tournament favorite in Lexi Thompson submitted a poor score in Round 3, shooting a 76 on the day and essentially falling out of contention.
