Rio Olympics medal count 2016: US women’s water polo earn gold
Updated 2016 Rio Olympics medal count on Day 14 after the US women’s water polo team captured the gold medal on Friday
With it being Day 14 at the 2016 Rio Olympics, many of the team competitions and tournaments are coming to a close. That means that sports like basketball and soccer will be subsiding, but also the more special Olympic sports like women’s water polo. The United States should be thankful that the latter ended on Friday, August 19 as it meant another gold medal being added to their total in the Rio Olympics medal count.
The US women’s water polo team came into Rio 2016 as the clear favorites and they played like it throughout the tournament. Never taking their foot off of the motor (propeller?), they blew by most every team put in their path. That strategy even extended into the final where they dominated Italy to win the gold medal, earning a 12-5 victory.
Also as part of the early action on Day 14, Great Britain captured two gold medals in equestrian events. Moreover, Colombia added another gold to their total in the women’s BMX competition. Meanwhile, it was another gold medal for the US in men’s BMX events.
While there are still plenty more medals to be handed out at the Games, the standings are beginning to take their final form in the Rio Olympics medal count.
