After a tight finish for the bronze medal, Team USA got disqualified from the 100m relay.

The 100m relay was billed as Usain Bolt’s last Olympic race, but it ended with controversy. Not from Bolt; as soon as he took off in the anchor leg, he was gone for good. But after him, it was a dogfight for the podium with Japan, USA, and Canada all vying for spots. Japan finished with the silver, USA got the bronze, and Canada finished two-hundredths of a second off the podium.

But after the race was finished, new details emerged saying that Justin Gatlin was handed the baton before the zone which resulted in a disqualification for USA. Canada would end up with the bronze as a result:

You have to feel bad for Gatlin here, who could’ve rectified his missing out on the 200m final. After he barely finished behind Bolt in the individual 100m, he surely felt that he deserved to run the anchor leg. Gatlin has been scrutinized over his past, but now he now gets disqualified over something that was out of his control.

For Canada, this is great news, as Andre DeGrasse finishes the Olympics with three medals — two bronze and one silver. The only reason he didn’t win a gold medal is because he was up against Usain Bolt every time. He is the best Canadian sprinter since Donovan Bailey, and represents the future of track and field. Now that Bolt is retired, the stage is now set for him to dominate in Tokyo.
