Russia’s Alexander Lesun continued his dominance of the Men’s Modern Pentathlon competition by winning gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Saturday evening saw the completion of the Men’s Modern Pentathlon at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Building off his record-setting performance in fencing on Thursday, Russia’s Alexander Lesun was able to turn that into Olympic gold on Sunday.

Lesun won the Men’s Modern Pentathlon with a total of 1,479. Though he dominate any of the other events like he did fencing on Thursday, he was good enough to bring home Olympic gold to Russia in the modern pentathlon.

Earning the silver medal was Ukraine’s Pavlo Tymoshchenko, finish only seven points off Lesun’s total with a combined score of 1,472. Where Tymoshchenko made up most of his work was in the combined running/shooting where he scored an impressive 635 points.

Finishing in third place in the Men’s Modern Pentathlon was Mexico’s Ismael Marcelo Hernandez Uscanga. He was off Lesun’s total by only 11 points with 1,468 points in the modern pentathlon. While he was outstanding in the pool and in horse jumping, a bad score on Thursday in the fencing portion prevented him from winning either the gold or the silver, having to instead settle for the bronze.

American Nathan Schrimsher finished in a respectable 10th place in the Men’s Modern Pentathlon. He did better in the swimming and horse jumping competitions to at least give himself a chance heading into the combined running/shooting. However, a middle of the pack effort in the fencing portion and the combined hurt his chances to medal for the United States in the Men’s modern pentathlon.

With Schrimsher not able to seal the deal on Saturday, the United States of America were unable to medal in either Men’s or Women’s Modern Pentathlon this Olympiad, after the Isaksen Sisters stumbled in their finals on Friday afternoon.
