The Dallas Cowboys might have found their answer at backup quarterback, as rookie Dak Prescott has the eye of quarterback Tony Romo and wideout Dez Bryant.
When presumed No. 2 quarterback Kellen Moore went down during 2016 NFL training camp with a broken leg, the Dallas Cowboys had to think quickly about how they were going to handle the backup quarterback situation behind perennial Pro Bowler Tony Romo.
While another backup in former UTEP Miners star Jameill Showers has also impressed in Cowboys training camp, it has been rookie quarterback Dak Prescott that has gotten the attention of key players in Dallas’ offense.
Romo and Pro Bowl wide receiver Dez Bryant had praised Prescott for his play in the Cowboys’ first two preseason games this season. Prescott was a star at Mississippi State University for the Bulldogs in the SEC. He had been largely the best quarterback in the SEC his final two years in Starkville, but he could have a bright future as an eventual replacement for Romo in Dallas.
Romo said, “I’ve been very impressed with how Dak has played. It kind of reminds me [of me] a little bit back in the day in some capacity. He’s been great. To have depth at that position, it is a big, big bonus. Hopefully he can continue to do that.”
Bryant harped on Prescott’s student mentality, thinking that it will help him down the road. “The guy is a student–give it to him….He wants to learn, he wants to be good. He’s sitting behind a Hall of Famer. Give him his credit.”
Though he still has a long way to go before becoming the next star quarterback in Dallas, Prescott does have more touchdown passes (six) than he does incompletions (five) in his two preseason games to date for the Cowboys.

He may have to develop a more consistent pocket presence than he did in Dan Mullen’s offense in Starkville, but Prescott has the arm strength, the accuracy, and most importantly the on-field leadership to be a respectable quarterback in the NFL. Prescott will have to learn under Romo, but he seems to be a good fit for the Cowboys’ future going forward.
