Jacoby Ellsbury robs Albert Pujols at the wall (Video)

ANAHEIM, CA - AUGUST 21: Jacoby Ellsbury

Jacoby Ellsbury has long been known to do his share of stealing on the basepaths. On Sunday, the larceny occurred with his glove.

Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury timed his leap perfectly at the fence on an Albert Pujols bomb to straight-away center field to end the 5th inning against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Sunday, robbing the future Hall of Famer of what would have been his 584th career home run, and keeping the deficit to 1-0.

Ellsbury, in his third season with New York after spending his first seven with the Boston Red Sox—where he was a part of two World Series champions—is no stranger to defensive gems, earning a gold glove back in 2011 while still with the Sox.

This is the second time this series that a Yankee has robbed an Angel from circling the bases. On Friday, Brett Gardner reached over the left field wall in similar fashion during the team’s 7-0 blowout.

The Yankees are looking to complete a sweep over the disappointing Angels, who, despite possessing such All Stars as Pujols and Mike Trout,  are dead last in the AL West and tied for the third worst record in the majors at 51-72.

Meanwhile, the Bronx Bombers, who seemingly were packing it up for the season after trading away stars Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller and Carlos Beltran for prospects, then subsequently releasing Alex Rodriguez, are 11-7 in the month of August since and currently just four games out of the second Wild Card in the American League. However, they would still need to leapfrog the Astros, Mariners, Royals and Tigers and, ultimately, the Orioles to claim that final spot.

Since the flurry of transactions, mammoth 6’8” closer Dellin Betances has five saves in as many chances, to go along with 14 strikeouts in 8 innings with just one run allowed.
