The 2016 Rio Olympics Mountain Bike competition finishes up on Sunday, as the men take to the course for the Men’s Cross-country final.

The cycling events at the 2016 Rio Olympics will come to an end on Sunday, as the men participate in the Men’s Cross-country final. Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic will look to defend the gold medal he won at the 2012 London Olympics.

The 2012 London event was a spectacle, as Kulhavy beat Switzerland’s Nino Schurter by only one second to capture the gold medal. Italy’s Marco Aurelio Fontana picked up the bronze medal, finishing behind Schurter by 24 seconds. It truly was an incredible showing by those three cyclists.

On Sunday, Kulhavy will not have to worry about either Schurter or Fontana, as both racers are not competing in Rio. However, there is a stacked field for this Summer’s event, and it will be very difficult for Kulhavy to repeat as champion.

Probably the most interesting story of this event will be Peter Sagan, the road racer who will be competing in Rio. Sagan is a five-time Tour de France green jacket winner, but will now turn his focus to Mountain Biking. He has a lot of experience with difficult terrain, but nothing like he will see on Sunday.

The cross-country track is 5km long, and the men will have to navigate through an artificial obstacle course. The race will be held at the Mountain Bike Centre, and it includes stone and grass trails. The riders have to navigate stones and logs, making it extremely difficult.

The event has no preliminary of semifinal rounds, as the riders will have one shot only to earn their medals. There will be fifty riders in the event this year, including France’s Julien Absalon, who is the top-ranked cyclist in the world.
