Taking a look at the final 2016 Rio Olympics medal count standings after Team USA won gold in men’s basketball

If you thought that the drama and the medals would subside on the final day of the 2016 Rio Olympics, man were you ever mistaken. With a plethora of gold medal matches in team sports in addition to many other events throughout the final day of the Games, there was plenty of movement in the Olympics medal count.

The final event of the day and what many consider to be the most publicized event of the Olympics in men’s basketball featured Team USA vs Serbia. Despite Serbia playing the Americans close when these two teams met in the group stage, that was not so much the case on Sunday. Kevin Durant and DeMarcus Cousins led the way to an absolute rout of the Serbs. Subsequently, it was the United States grabbing the final gold medal of the Games with Serbia taking home silver. Spain defeated Australia earlier in the day for the bronze.

Also winning a gold medal on Sunday was Denmark thanks to men’s handball. Mikkel Hansen is widely regarded as the best player in the sport and he finally got his Olympic gold. Moreover, Brazil added to their gold medal count as the host nation, winning gold in the men’s volleyball competition by defeating Italy.

Back to the Americans, Team USA added another gold in boxing. Amateur sensation Claressa Maria Shields won her second-straight Olympic gold medal in women’s boxing, writing her name in the history books.
