22. Dirk Koetter – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I’m sure some of you are seeing Tampa Bay Buccaneers newcomer Dirk Koetter a few spots ahead of guys like Pederson in Philly and McAdoo in New York and wondering how that could possibly be the case. And that’s a more-than-fair question, as they all boast the same amount of head coaching experience. However, there’s something about Koetter that inspires just a bit more confidence.

For starters, the Koetter’s experience prior to his first NFL head-coaching gig is measures more extensive than most of his first-year peers, having spent nine years as a head coach in college at both Boise State and Arizona State. Not only that, but he brings to table the same OC bona fides as both Pederson and McAdoo. That head coaching experience — even if it wasn’t in the NFL — looms large in our rankings, as does his relative success in those capacities.

In the context of our rankings, that all-levels knowledge is akin to being a president with stints as a senator or governor on the resume, and what ultimately vaults Koetter ahead of other first-year coaches. He simply has a leg up on his contemporaries, not only because of where he’s been, but what he’s done while there.
