Ranking 32 NFL head coaches based on presidential potential
8. Gary Kubiak – Denver Broncos
When listing the 10 best head coaches in the NFL, I’m not 100 percent sure Gary Kubiak would make the list. He did just win the Super Bowl, however, so what the hell do I know? And despite the fact that he may benefit greatly from having a transcendent level of talent on the defensive side of the ball, Kubiak actually ranks higher for me as a potential president than he does as an overall head coach.
One of the things Kubiak did last year that really spoke highly of him as a head coach was his choice to put Peyton Manning back into the starting lineup right before the playoffs. While Manning was undeniably atrocious and mistake-prone for the Broncos, the thing often overlooked is that his mistakes were never that costly. In essence, he was making veteran mistakes, not costly rookie mistakes that can swing games. Recognizing that the Denver defense could carry the team, Kubiak went with the option with less variance. It paid off, and speaks well to Kubiak’s judgment.
Another of Kubiak’s presidential qualities: He tries to find value at every position. With how he uses tight ends regardless of talent level and how he shifts his defenses around, Kubiak is always digging for hidden value. Whether it’s tapping an Undersecretary of Agriculture or nominating a Supreme Court Justice, that’s the kind of attention to detail that any great president should have.
