Ranking 32 NFL head coaches based on presidential potential
29. Chip Kelly – San Francisco 49ers
As recently as two years ago, there would’ve been people up in arms over putting Chip Kelly anywhere outside of the top 10. But a great deal can change in two years in the NFL, and few things have experienced a more tumultuous realignment than the public opinion surrounding Chip Kelly: NFL head coach. Now, as Kelly enters his first year as head cheese for the San Francisco 49ers, there are plenty of who’d insist even 29 is too generous for this miscast offensive genius.
In a manner of speaking, Kelly as an NFL head coach is not unlike a radical presidential candidate: He’s not just looking to shake things up; he’s looking to completely dismantle the system. However, his stint with the Philadelphia Eagles more than proved that sometimes things are in place because they work — well enough to have kept us from nuclear annihilation, anyway. Mess too hard with certain power gears, you’re liable to send the whole world spiraling into chaos.
Even if political change on a grand scale feels like a cool idea, Kelly would be a candidate who’d target corruption and grift and lobbyist influence…. right before signing an executive order to eliminate the Navy. Say the economy’s steadily improving. Chip Kelly would be the president who institutes Bitcoins as the only acceptable currency. Which isn’t a good look for anyone. Long short, he should be happy to not be flat-out last on this list.
