Ranking 32 NFL head coaches based on presidential potential
28. Jason Garrett – Dallas Cowboys
To be fair, you can’t solely blame Jason Garrett for what the Dallas Cowboys are and how they’re perceived around the NFL. Jerry Jones is very much at the forefront of the poor-decision-making, less-than-stellar public image… and the fact that they basically had tackling dummies backing up Tony Romo in 2015. While none of that should dismiss Garrett out of hand, nor does it inspire much confidence in his potential as president, either.
For one, how Garrett has handled adversity during his stint at the Cowboys helm has been less than ideal, to frame it as generously as possible. When Jones put him in situations like the one with Greg Hardy in 2015, or when Romo sat out with injuries last season, Garrett was atrocious in terms of his ability to present a united front, essentially stopping just short of throwing up his hands and saying, “I don’t know, man.”
Worse still, when thinking about Garrett’s hypothetical presidential administration, it’s impossible to ignore how poorly he reacts under duress. Now, suddenly having to rely on Brandon Weeden and Kellen Moore to lead your offense is enough to make anyone sweat. But Garrett essentially asked those guys to do Tony Romo things. That’s not merely unfair or unreasonable; it’s a complete panic move.
You want that guy with his finger on the button? Didn’t think so.
