The role as as quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys is one of most-high profile jobs in all of sports.
Like center field for the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Lakers center, and quarterback for Notre Dame, the role of Cowboys QB boasts, like its uber-prestegious counterparts, a truly legendary lineage.
From the team’s inception in 1960, you had the reigns handed down from Don Meredith to Craig Morton. Then they were given to Roger Staubach and Danny White. Finally, the 1990s saw Troy Aikman and three Super Bowls. From Aikman’s last game in 2000 through 2005, Dallas went through a mucked up-cluster-you-know-what phase. Why? Because the Cowboys like to operate in a mucked up-cluster-you-know-what type of phase.
Out of that mess came Tony Romo.
Romo has not enjoyed playoff success, and he remains in great position, surrounded by a solid offensive line and top-notch skill players. In short, he has emerged as one of the most important quarterbacks in the league. Still, Romo is 36 years old, and only recently recovered from a pair of broken clavicles. It’s time for the Cowboys to look toward the future.
Arguably the biggest edition to the Cowboys franchise — aside from the new Ford Center in Frisco, Texas — is rookie Quarterback Dak Prescott from Mississippi State.
In just two preseason games, the fourth-round pick has teased a fan base starved for the “next great Cowboys quarterback.” In Prescott’s first appearance against the Los Angeles Rams, he outperformed fellow rookie Jared Goff with a 10-for-12, two-touchdown performance. In his second game Prescott was even better with a 12-for-15, four-touchdown effort against the Miami Dolphins.
The Dak Attack is running wild so far but let’s just calm everything down here.
The Cowboys are notorious for their bold and daring moves. Whether it is taking on Terrell Owens or welcoming the short-lived Joseph Randle era, owner jJerry Jones will take chances. However, you already see Cowboys Nation ready to start the Prescott era. Some people will draft Romo’s backup for fantasy football.
It’s clear the Cowboys have found their future. However it shall remain in the future until further notice.
Teams always need to be looking out for the next franchise quarterback, but fans of the Cowboys seem to be forgetting Romo already. It’s true Romo’s play hasn’t brought out the best in Cowboys fans but it’s PRESEASON. Unless Romo gets hurt again or is suddenly atrocious, keep Dak away from the starting lineup come September.
Former head coach and Hall of Famer Bill Parcells always talked about wanting to hold off the anointment oil. Prescott will surely be tested by the strong Seattle Seahawks defense this week, putting the budding controversy to rest. At that juncture, Prescott can go back to being Romo’s understudy and learn with a clipboard.
If Prescott impresses, the calls for him to start will only get louder. I may need to invest in some noise-canceling headphones.
