Chargers DT Damion Square suspended four games by NFL

San Diego Chargers defensive tackle Damion Square was suspended four games by the NFL due to violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
While Chargers defensive tackle Damion Square has looked good in the preseason, he’ll be on the sidelines to start the regular season. On Wednesday, the NFL announced a four-game suspension had been handed out to Square due to violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan broke the news on Twitter. It was among the latest announced suspensions for the league, as several were handed out last week as well including New York Giants kicker Josh Brown.
This is only the latest bad news for the Chargers. Most of the day has been dominated by Joey Bosa declining the largest offer the team has extended yet. San Diego also said it believes the rookie defensive end may not play a full 16-game slate in 2016.
As for Square, he’s been the team leader in sacks through two preseason games so far. According to ESPN, Square has two sacks, three tackles for losses and two hits on quarterbacks in 45 total snaps.
The fourth-year player out of Alabama played the 2013 season for the Philadelphia Eagles. After a season of inactivity, he joined San Diego’s roster.
Square participated in the second half of the Chargers’ 2015 season recording six tackles, three quarterback hits and a fumble recovery. The team’s defensive unit was also receiving a good bit of praise for how they looked down the proverbial stretch.

With Square’s suspended and Bosa sitting out, the Chargers have a depth issue up front. Fans in San Diego may need to be even more patient than usual as they wait for some good news this season. Perhaps the team hits free agency to find some bodies until Bosa and Square arrive.
