Jim Rome bringing The Jungle to Del Mar: Fans welcome
Jim Rome is bringing The Jungle to Del Mar Racetrack and listeners can join him there for free, Friday morning live, 9-12 PST. Look for Rome to talk on racing and Shared Belief, San Diego sports in general and the San Diego Chargers’ stadium controversy.
The Jungle and Jim Rome hit the road Friday for an outdoor remote on The Mighty 1090 AM, taking place on the Plaza de Mexico at Del Mar Racetrack. Airing from 9 a.m to 12 p.m. Jungle fans and those Jungle-curious will get in free to join up with Rome and his Clones in the audience.
Not only do you get the chance to be part of the live audience, you can stick around until the races start at 3:30 p.m. without having to pay admission. A Del Mar press release encourages fans to take advantage of free parking until 11:30 a.m. and free admission until 1 p.m., and to enter through the Stretch Run Admission gates.
Friday is a big day for Rome. He’s coming back to his professional roots in the San Diego radio market. Meanwhile, Del Mar is honoring Eclipse Champion Shared Belief, his racehorse who succumbed to colic last December, by running the Shared Belief Stakes. If you listened to Rome’s Thursday Jungle broadcast, you could tell he was chomping at the bit to get down to Del Mar.
Rome and his wife Janet race under the nom de course, Jungle Racing, LLC. They race as sole owners, but more often they partner with other racing partnerships, breeders and owners. Shared Belief was their horse of a lifetime, a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and a force majeure as an older horse.
Another great horse Jungle Racing raced in partnership was the mare Mizdirection, winner of the 2012 and 2013 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprints. When Mizdirection was retired from racing, she was sold as a broodmare for $2,700,000. In a nice turn, Taman Guard, owned by Jungle Racing and partners, is running in the Shared Belief Stakes holding at 4-to-1 on the morning line.
Earlier in the week, Rome chatted about the remote on San Diego’s 105.7 FM.
Jim Rome invites fans to participate in The Jungle’s audience.
"I’ll be sure we don’t only talk horse racing on Friday, I will be there from nine to twelve broadcasting live. And if the listeners get there, the 1090 listeners and my Clones, get there early enough it’s a free show, you’ll be part of the show. We’ll be talking San Diego all day. There’s going to be good energy. I know that some of the smack off winners are planning to roll down and rush the set and do what they do. I’m trying to figure out what to do with them. I think I’m going to find ‘The Bulldog’ Joe Tutino and talk about the old days. Trevor Hoffman, Jerry Hollendorfer who trained Shared Belief is going to be there, Craig Dado is going to come on. I think it’s going to be a great, great time."

Jim Rome on the inaugural running of the Shared Belief Stakes:
"It’s incredible, it’s such an amazing thing. I would never have expected that a track that is world renowned and storied, that has the history that it does, to say we are going to take a stakes race and rename it for Shared Belief that makes us feel so good. We’re so proud, so I never expected that. That’s the biggest reason we are going to be there, to say thank you; to thank Joe Harper, to thank Craig Dado, to thank Del Mar and to be there for that race. You know how hard it is to get a horse that’s good enough to even run at Del Mar, but to have a race named after your horse is an incredible honor."
Jim Rome on the San Diego football mess
"It’s sad man, I can get more into this on Friday. I got my start there (San Diego). I spent time down there. I was there when Billy Ray (Smith, Jr.) played. I was there when things were good. I know that town can get behind that team. That town is as good as any football town in America when things were great. It’s still a great town even when things aren’t great. I mean the thought that they could move to L.A. There’s nothing right about that. I don’t see how that could possibly work."
