Joey Bosa’s mom ups the ante against Chargers on social media
Joey Bosa’s mom had already weighed on her son’s situation with the San Diego Chargers, and now she has upped the ante again on social media.
The contract negotiations, or lack thereof at times, between Joey Bosa and the San Diego Chargers reached a public pitch on Wednesday. The team released a statement essentially saying their proverbial “best offer” was now off the table, and Bosa’s representatives issued a statement in response.
Earlier this month, Bosa’s mom wrote “I wish we pulled an Eli Manning” on Facebook. That’s a reference to Manning’s refusal to play in San Diego back in 2004, which effectively forced a trade to the New York Giants.
On Thursday, Cheryl Bosa upped the ante again via social media.
She also posted a link to the same article on her Facebook page, apparently.
Bosa and the Chargers are quibbling over offset language, and the payout schedule for his signing bonus. Those are the two biggest issues for rookie contracts these days, since the new collective bargaining agreement started in 2011. Offset language is a particular sticking point, since it takes the team off the hook for some money if the player is cut before the end of the contract.
The Chargers were not wise to put the contentious negotiations with Bosa into public light. Bosa’s agents have an obligation to serve their client’s wishes, so it’s even hard to blame them for their role. This comes down to Bosa possibly wanting to set some sort of precedent, with input from family members influencing his stance.

Sitting out the entire season and re-entering the draft in 2017 is a ludicrous idea for Bosa. The contract the Chargers have laid out is the best he’ll do in the short-term, with money he may never make up if he sits out.
An argument can surely be made against teams having all the leverage in contract negotiations. By this time next week though, it would be shocking if Bosa is not on the practice field for the Chargers.
