Report: Ryan Lochte to be summoned to testify in Rio
Ryan Lochte drama continues as reports claim the swimmer will be summoned to testify back in Rio.
If you thought the Ryan Lochte drama was over, think again. Reports are swirling that Brazilian police are expected to summon Lochte to testify back in Rio. Even though the Olympic swimmer left Brazil and has recanted most of his original story of being held at gunpoint and robbed, the police investigation continues in Rio. Prosecutors want Lochte to testify before Brazil’s Justice Department.
The tale began when Lochte, Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Jimmy Feigen went out for a night of partying in Rio on August 14. The details remain fuzzy, but Lochte’s story was that the group had been pulled over by men with badges. Guns were pulled out, and the swimmers were robbed.
This account was called into question as soon as video footage appeared showing the men returning nonchalantly to the Olympic Village. There was also the account of the men trashing a gas station and being detained by security guards due to their actions. All while not being held at gunpoint.
Lochte flew home to the United States on August 17 while the other swimmers involved were pulled off their flights to be questioned by police. Lochte, who remains at the center of the investigation, has not been questioned by Rio police. He has also not been back to Brazil since his story started to break down. He has since apologized for his actions in an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer.

While there are no charges currently filed against Lochte, the only possibility for a plea deal is in Brazil. The possibility of extradition remains open should charges be filed against Lochte. Lochte would face no penalty should he decide to ignore the summons and decline to testify.
