Spencer Ware

After Charles was injured, the Chiefs running backs formed more of a committee, but the main contributor and leading rusher was Charcandrick West.  West has been passed this preseason, though, by Spencer Ware who opens the year as the clear #2.

Ware has been getting all the starters reps in preseason with Charles not available.  He opened the preseason with a solid 24 yards on five carries and got into the end zone as well. In Week 2 he was in the end zone again while putting together 37 yards on ten carries and adding 24 more yards while catching all four of the passes thrown his way.

Ware has proven he can be a solid starter in Andy Reid’s system if something were to happen to Charles.  If you do draft Charles adding Ware later is a strategy that makes sense (even though I’m not huge into handcuffing). Ware would likely be much more a feature back than he was last year if asked to step up and has been very solid all training camp and preseason.

It remains to be seen how much work he’ll get when Charles is healthy and in his starting role.  It probably won’t be enough of the work to make him a fantasy starter as a change-of-pace back, but on bye weeks he could be ok for flex if you had to. He has shown he can catch passes out of the backfield and in the checkdown heavy system of Alex Smith that definitely helps his PPR value.

Ware is currently being drafted in the early 20th round as the 58th RB taken. He’s drafted in almost all formate right toward the end of the draft. He’s a solid stash and an option that all Charles owners should try and grab for their bench.
