Which quarterback will be Dak Prescott’s backup for the Dallas Cowboys?
The Dallas Cowboys received some bad news on Saturday, when it was announced quarterback Tony Romo had a broken bone in his back. Romo is expected to miss a significant chunk of the season, which will greatly impact the Cowboys’ chances of making the playoffs. Now, the Cowboys will turn to quarterback Dak Prescott.
Before the season began, the Cowboys had a full healthy roster of quarterback, with Romo, Prescott and Kellen Moore primed to go for the season. However, Moore went down at the beginning of camp and now Romo has followed suit. That leaves the rookie Prescott to now try and carry the team moving forward.
The good news is that Prescott has been lights out in the preseason. In fact, he’s been the best quarterback in the preseason and has been near perfect. When the regular season arrives though, Prescott will have to deal with teams planning for him and things will look a lot different. While that’s an entirely different issue, the Cowboys now have to be really worried about their depth at quarterback.
They lost two guys they planned on having on the roster to begin the year. That means that there is currently one individual that is behind Prescott. As of right now, Jameill Showers is the backup to Prescott. The Cowboys signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2015 out of UTEP and he has been off and on the practice squad.
If there is a safe bet to make, the Cowboys are going to be looking for a veteran to put behind Prescott. While Showers has a year under his belt, he hasn’t seen any game action and therefore the team needs some experience. Not much is out there, but roster cuts are coming soon and they can strike there.
