Donald Trump was against Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest, stating he should ‘find a country that works better for him.’

Colin Kaepernick’s decision to not stand during the Star Spangled Banner divided a nation. While some people commended him for taking a stand against racial inequality, others felt that wasn’t the right way to do it. He didn’t win over any San Francisco 49ers fans with his performance last year, but that act was enough for Ed Werder to call him the most polarizing player in the NFL.

But as far as polarizing figures go, nobody fits that bill better than Donald Trump. The Presidential nominee weighed in on the Kaepernick situation, and unsurprisingly, he wasn’t a fan of it.

As a guest on the Dori Monson Show (h/t Sports Illustrated), he told them “I have followed it and I think it’s personally not a good thing. I think it’s a terrible thing, and you know, maybe he should find a country that works better for him, let him try, it’s not gonna happen.”

The timing of this statement is ironic, since Trump recently addressed black voters. He told them “What do you have to lose” by voting for him. The line came off as abjectly racist, as he stated their conditions couldn’t get any worse if he was President. When Kaepernick was asked about his stance on Trump, he called him “openly racist.”

But given how he has treated minority groups so far, suggesting something like that is well off the mark. While Kaepernick’s decision was fueled by politics, the NFL doesn’t require their players to stand during the anthem. And Trump’s statements only serve to underscore Kaepernick’s point even further.

Trump’s remarks are sure to add more fuel to this ongoing debate, as his supporters will surely be united against the 49ers quarterback. There was a video of a fan, who is basically a proto-typical Trump supporter, burning a Kaepernick jersey while playing the national anthem. But now that Trump himself has spoken out, it won’t be long before other fans follow in his footsteps.
