Team USA “Final Five” member Gabby Douglas was hospitalized due to a mouth infection causing her to miss an MTV Video Music Awards appearance on Sunday night.
The “Final Five” was without one of its members Sunday night at MTV’s annual Music Video Awards show. Gabby Douglas was reportedly hospitalized to treat a past mouth infection causing her to miss the onstage appearance with her teammates. That meant missing out on all the fun and celebrity-selfie opportunities at MTV’s VMAs ceremony.
According to USA Today, the presenters included teammates Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez and Simone Biles. Gabby was absent from the scheduled presenters, but tweeted out a photo to show herself on the road to recovery.
The tweet read, “Out of the hospital and resting comfortably! Final Five so sad I can’t be with you all to present tonight! MTV thank you xoxo.”

Douglas’ publicist, Lesley Burbridge, said that Gabby was experiencing swelling and “adverse reactions to medications” in the treatment of an infected past mouth injury.
Luckily, Gabby still got a shoutout from her four teammates who seemed to be having a good time. Simone Biles even tweeted out a group photo taken with Kim Kardashian.
For Douglas, nothing compares to the moments she experiencing winning medals in Rio this past Summer. However, getting to be a part of the MTV Video Music Awards and meeting various stars probably would’ve been a lot of fun too.

The Final Five was quite the talk in Brazil, as they took home gold for Team USA. The widespread speculation is Douglas plans to retire from Olympics competition. If true, that means she will not be a participant at the 2020 games in Tokyo. Hopefully, she will have a speedy recovery from her latest ailment and be able to attend any events that come her way!
