The San Diego Chargers and Joey Bosa ended a long holdout by signing a deal at the 11th hour.

The San Diego Chargers got the best defensive player in the draft in Joey Bosa at third overall. However, the start to his NFL career was far from amicable. The two sides were at odds all throughout training camp and the preseason, as Bosa kept rejecting every one of the offers thrown at him.

The two argued over offset language in his deal, as well as how much guaranteed money would be offered. Had Bosa not signed a deal, he would’ve had to sit out the entire season, so signing a deal was in his best interest. But the way the Chargers threw him under the bus only served to complicate things even further.

The fact that this deal came right before the start of the season, and given how this holdout has progressed, the Twitter world was astonished that the two sides came to a deal.

Plenty of past Chargers players have held out before the start of the season, only to end up reaching a deal. Among them are LaDainian Tomlinson, Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, Vincent Jackson, and Eric Weddle. While it was a surprise that this one worked out, history indicated that it would only be a matter of when rather than if.

Now that it’s over, the Chargers can finally focus on playing football again. Bosa brings a lot to the table. During his time in Ohio State, he was a consensus All-American and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2014. He can explode off the snap, and is extremely versatile. In addition to being a key piece of the defensive line, he’s also able to drop back if necessary.

There’s no telling what Bosa’s mindset will be heading into the season. At $25.8 million over four years, the Chargers have invested a lot into Bosa, considering he hasn’t played an NFL snap yet. But if the Chargers are lucky, he’ll be motivated to prove he was worth the money.
