Should No Man’s Sky players be able to get refunds?

Tried it, didn’t like it all that much, want money back seems fair in some cases, but is it after playing for 50+ hours?

Poor No Man’s Sky.

Hello Games’ love letter to procedurally generated space was one of the most eagerly anticipated, super hyped video game releases in recent memory. Some people were looking forward to it so much that even reporting on its delayed release got one journalist death threats earlier this year.

Alas, the bloom came off the rose of endless exploration pretty darn quick. No Man’s Sky has now been out for less than a month on PS4 and PC, and after mixed reviews, the general consensus is that it wasn’t a paradigm-shattering leap forward for gaming — or that it sort of was, but got boring quickly.

That’s led to some buyer’s remorse, and Slate reported today on the efforts of some No Man’s Sky players to seek refunds. Here’s the thing: Some of these people have reportedly played the game for dozens of hours and still asked for their money back.

Two schools of thought are emerging here:

Pro-Refund

No Man’s Sky is a truly enormous game, so playing it for just a few hours would not be sufficient to discover if it was everything it was cracked up to be. The norms of when it’s acceptable to ask for a refund shouldn’t apply.

Anti-Refund

You aren’t generally able to play a game for 50-70 hours and then get your money back, so the particulars of this one shouldn’t matter. You took the risk when you paid your $60 just like with any other title.
