The San Diego Chargers announced they have cut veteran wide receiver James Jones.

Four weeks after signing with the San Diego Chargers, wide receiver James Jones has been cut. The team announced the decision to waive the 32-year-old veteran on Monday.

Entering his 10th NFL season, Jones was brought on to fill the gap left by wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who was sidelined by a season-ending knee injury. But the one-time Super Bowl champion was unable to find his place in San Diego, failing to stand out compared to younger targets like Tyrell Williams and Dontrelle Inman.

According to Michael Gehlkan of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Jones was unable to get comfortable in the offense under offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. The fact that he joined the Chargers after training camp had already started probably didn’t help with the learning curve.

Last season, the long-time Green Bay Packer stepped up for a receiving core that was largely devastated by injuries. Jones played in 16 games, finishing the year with 50 receptions for 890 yards and eight touchdowns.

After spending eight of his nine years in the league with the Packers, Jones was unable to stick with Philip Rivers’ squad. This comes just months after Green Bay informed him that they were moving forward with a younger receiving core.

Though his prime is far behind him, Jones still has plenty left in the tank and could help a team somewhere as long as he’s not too heavily relied upon. As a wide receiver with 433 receptions, 5,861 yards and 51 touchdowns to his name over his career, he has plenty of veteran experience to offer any locker room.

Provided he’s not a No. 1 option like he was for the last two seasons, Jones could still be of use. The question now is where he might end up after getting cut by the Chargers.
