San Diego Chargers waive Zach Mettenberger in roster cuts
By Ian O'Brien
After reuniting with his old head coach, San Diego Chargers quarterback Zach Mettenberger will not make the roster after an underwhelming preseason.
The San Diego Chargers have trimmed their roster to 75 and backup quarterback Zach Mettenberger was unable to survive the roster cuts. The 25-year-old quarterback finds himself without an NFL job for the second time since being cut by the Tennessee Titans. The Titans originally drafted him in 2014.
Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt previously worked with the former LSU passer in Tennessee during his time as the Titans’ head coach. However, Whisenhunt found himself reunited with his fellow outcast after being fired by the Titans. Mettenberger experienced minimal success in his previous stint with Whisenhunt, as he produced an 0-10 record as a starter.
Mettenberger will not have too much trouble finding a backup job though. He previously drew interest from the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants after being cut by the Titans in May. It remains to be seen whether either of those teams will still be interested in adding Mettenberger for depth on their rosters. Meanwhile, the Chargers will move forward with Kellen Clemens and undrafted rookie Mike Bercovici as their primary backups for the time being.

The Chargers will aim to have a much smoother transition into the 2016 season. They got on the right track by reaching a rookie deal with defensive end Joey Bosa, who was drafted third overall by the team. Bosa signed a four-year, $25.8 million deal after one of the longest holdouts in recent NFL history.
The Chargers rookie will seek to develop quickly after missing the majority of training camp and preseason. Bosa’s talent level is undeniable after a productive career at Ohio State that included a national championship.
