SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett gave his take on the Colin Kaepernick protest, offering interesting insight to both sides of the divisive topic.

ESPN SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett spoke about the Colin Kaepernick national anthem protest situation. Verrett was short and to the point, conveying a compelling argument to better understand both sides of this divisive topic.

Verrett said that “I’ve always stood for the anthem because I believe in the promise of America, what the flag is supposed to symbolize, even though America often falls short of what its supposed to symbolize.”

He told two brief stories about his parents to illustrate his point. Verrett said his father served in the military during World War II, but was still discriminated against once he returned home. Verrett said his mother was the valedictorian of her high school, but couldn’t attend a major university in Louisiana because of the color of her skin.

Verrett would close his argument by saying that discrimination still exists today for minorities in terms of hiring, pay, and the justice system. He ends with, “you’re not always going to agree with the method, but let’s pay as much attention to the substance as we do to the symbols.”
