It was too good to be true. The world was denied a fantastic Gus Johnson play call when Stanford Cardinal running back Christian McCaffrey’s 96-yard punt return for a touchdown was called back thanks to a block in the back versus the Kansas State Wildcats on Friday night.

Up 3-0 on Kansas State at home in the first quarter, McCaffrey again showed us why he is the most dynamic athlete in the Pac-12, maybe even the Power 5, with this incredible punt return on the Wildcats.
McCaffrey was a finalist for the 2015 Heisman Trophy as a 19-year-old sophomore with the 2015 Pac-12 Champion Cardinal. He and Clemson Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson are largely expected to return to New York this December for the 2016 ceremony.
McCaffrey will continue to light up Pac-12 defenses this fall. If it wasn’t for a block in the back, he would already have a highlight reel play for his 2016 Heisman campaign.

College football hasn’t seen a playmaker in the backfield like McCaffrey since Reggie Bush starred for the rival USC Trojans under then head coach Pete Carroll in the mid-2000s. Stanford would end the first quarter with a 3-0 lead on Kansas State before getting an early touchdown in the second quarter to go up 10-0 on the visiting Wildcats.
