DraftKings MLB Picks: Top Bargain plays for September 2nd
Finding value is the ever so elusive, “Holy Grail.” Making cap room for pitchers and big bats can make all the difference in a lineup. With a little elbow grease in the research department, I’m hoping to offer a handful of players that could give critical salary relief for tonight’s DraftKings MLB picks.
After a much needed night off from MLB DFS, the Bargain Bin Picks are back for a solid 14 game slate. Its shaping up to be a good old fashioned Coors Field night. The game in Denver will feature the two highest team totals. Arizona is projected to score 6.1 runs, while the Rockies are projected for 5.5 runs. This is a sizable difference than any other team playing tonight, so being able to identify the chalk should be fairly easy. If you decide to take a contrarian approach tonight, I’d implore you to take a gander at the Phillies. Three Phillies’ batters are priced at the stone minimum, in a spot where they’re favored (-143), at home, and projected to score 4.7 runs. Outside of the Coors Field game, it’s one of the highest team totals on the slate. I mean, don’t get me wrong, the Phillies offense is atrocious, but if you plan on paying up for the likes of Noah Syndergaard, Carlos Carrasco, or David Price, these Phillies batters open up a lot of salary room.

Philip Gosselin – ARI (2B) – $3600
Arizona should put up some runs tonight, and at Gosselin’s price, he’s one of the top value plays on the slate. Gosselin holds fairly neutral splits, so facing a lefty doesn’t give him the normal boost, but if he’s leading off, he’ll be a good bet to return value.
Steve Pearce – BAL (1B/2B) – $3700
If you’re looking to get away from the game in Colorado, Pearce is in a favorable spot at home against the Yankees. Pearce is another guy with neutral splits, so facing Green shouldn’t limit him. Pearce has been hitting the ball with an average distance of 269 feet, a 50% FB rate, and 45% hard hit rate, in the last 15 days.
Odubel Herrera – PHI (OF) – $2000, Freddy Galvis – PHI (SS) – $2000, Maikel Franco – PHI (3B) – $2000
If DraftKings had priced these guys solely off of their recent performance, I’d have to agree with them, but as I mentioned, this seems like a great spot for the whole Phillies team. Herrera and Galvis are the guys to look at from a match up stand point. Both are much better against righties, as Herrera holds a .361 wOBA and Galvis holds a .300 wOBA. Franco has a rough matchup tonight, but has some power upside, that he’s seemingly been saving up (only 4 hits in his last 8 games). If you have to pick one, Herrera is the best choice for his ability to get on base, his splits, and his stolen base upside.

John Jaso – PIT (1B) – $2900
Instead of my Ed McMahon reference, I’ll switch it up and go with a Jack Nicholson’s, “Here’s Johnny!” After a long awaited return, Jaso finds himself back on the list tonight. Jaso will get a chance to face the righty, Junior Guerra, in a good spot for the Pirates. Jaso holds a .339 wOBA split against righties. If he’s batting in the top 2, he could be considered.
Ryan Raburn – COL (OF) – $3100
Raburn is one of the cheaper players from the Rockies tonight. He’s drastically better against lefties, where he holds a .405 wOBA, and a .288 ISO split. I wouldn’t be surprised if Raburn hits one out tonight.
Josh Bell – PIT (1B) – $3000
Bell should be considered if Jaso is not batting second. Bell is a switch hitter, but has had much more success when facing a righty. He holds a .465 wOBA and a .258 ISO split against them.

Note: Keep in mind that recommended plays are based off of early information and will be subject to change as lineups are released. Some cheaper players are more suspect to be scratched from the lineup or bumped down the lineup order.
