Sacramento Kings guard Darren Collison pleads guilty to domestic battery

Sacramento Kings point guard Darren Collison has pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. 

Back on May 30, Sacramento Kings point guard Darren Collison found himself in a sticky situation. He was arrested following a phone call from a victim who named Collison as her attacker. To avoid jail time, Collison has pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery.

“Words cannot describe the feelings and regret that I have been experiencing the last few months,” Collison said, via SI.com. “My family and I found ourselves in such an unfamiliar situation and it has been a difficult few months. This is far from who I am as a person and not something I am proud of. I take full responsibility for my actions.”

As a part of his sentence, Collision faces three years of informal probation and must serve 20 days in jail. He also must serve a 52-week batterers’ program and perform 20 hours of community service.

The Kings released a statement on Collison’s situation courtesy of CSNBayArea.com.

"Domestic violence is a serious issue across our nation and one that runs contrary to our organization’s values. We’re disappointed by Darren’s behavior and today he accepted full responsibility for his actions."

Last season, Collison averaged 14 points per game, 4.3 assists per game, and 2.3 rebounds per game in 30 minutes per game. He served as the backup point guard to Rajon Rondo, who signed a two-year deal with the Chicago Bulls. It remains to be seen if the Kings or the league will punish Collison for his actions. He will most likely be suspended.

The Kings signing of Ty Lawson shows that the Kings might be aware that Collison is likely facing a suspension. Collison was originally drafted by the New Orleans Hornets in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft. Collison has played for the Hornets, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers, and the Kings.
