Georgia used some Nick Chubb fourth-quarter heroics to put away North Carolina in their huge Week 1 matchup from the Georgia Dome

Despite the historical pedigree of each program, the Week 1 college football matchup between the Georgia Bulldogs and North Carolina Tar Heels promised to be a huge one. Not only would it be an impressive win to start the year for the victor, but also a big confidence builder. As the two squads met in the Georgia Dome on Saturday, it lived up to the billing of a great game.

A returning Nick Chubb put Georgia on the board first on Saturday evening, punching it in from deep in North Carolina territory. However, a rotating quarterback for Georgia with Greyson Lambert and Jacob Eason seemed to make it hard to totally find a rhythm. However, Mitch Trubisky and the Tar Heels offense couldn’t find theirs either. As such, the Bulldogs went into halftime up 14-10.

However, the Tar Heels swung momentum immediately at the start of the second half. The dynamic T.J. Logan for UNC took a kick return to the house to put the Heels ahead 17-14. After a solid defensive stand, it looked like it was going to be all North Carolina thanks again to Logan. The back broke free for a long run down the right sideline and skated into the end zone to pull ahead by 10 points.

Unfortunately, Trubisky and the Heels offense died after that while the Bulldogs were still churning. Isaiah McKenzie came up big in the receiving game, hooking up with Eason for a score. Then, the Tar Heels suffered from two big penalties and then a screen pass in their own end zone for a safety. When Georgia then was able to kick a field goal, it was time for the exclamation mark. Chubb dashed through the Heels defense for a long touchdown and the score.

North Carolina tried, but they didn’t have the firepower to even get on the board again. Thus, it was Georgia coming away with the big win, 33-24.

Three Stars

Nick Chubb: Talk about a triumphant comeback for the Georgia running back. Coming back from that horrific knee injury, Chubb rushed for 222 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.

Isaiah McKenzie: It seemed like McKenzie was making plays everywhere for the Bulldogs on Saturday. He finished with 122 yards receiving and a score on six catches along with some solid work as a return man.

T.J. Logan: Logan was a spark plug for the Tar Heels all night. He rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown on only six carries while also taking a kick return to the house.
