Iowa linebacker Josey Jewell viciously took out the head of his opponent and was ejected from the game.

The Iowa Hawkeyes spent their first half of their first game of the season asserting their dominance. With Miami of Ohio in town, the Hawkeyes dished out the big hits and brought a high level of physicality. One player in particular got a little too physical.

As the Hawkeyes were taking the ball back the other way, linebacker Josey Jewell decided that school was in session and it was time to dish out the pain. Miami’s Matt Merimee wasn’t ready for Jewell to come in and he got his head smashed. Smashed might be an understatement, as Jewell launched himself at full force into his opponent’s head.

He was ejected from the game immediately for targeting and the Hawkeyes lost a key contributor on defense. Fortunately for the Hawkeyes, they were already had built up a decent lead at that point. Still, it’s a hit that was completely unnecessary.

When people talk about concussions and the violence of the game, this is one of those plays that they will turn to. The sickening thud of the helmet-to-helmet shot is what makes this play even worse.
