LSU couldn’t overcome a poor offensive showing, losing to Wisconsin in Week 1 of the college football season

The LSU Tigers and Wisconsin Badgers occupied Lambeau Field for the first college football game ever in the famed stadium on Saturday. On paper, this was largely a mismatch. LSU entered the matchup as the No. 5 team in the country. Meanwhile, the Badgers came into this game having lost several key pieces and expected to take some time to get things right. However, things played out much differently.

Right away, it was clear that Wisconsin was ready to take on a strong SEC foe. Their defense had answers for Leonard Fournette early on, stifling him largely. Moreover, Brandon Harris continued to struggle incredibly mightily. The only thing keeping LSU alive was the fact that they too were playing great defense. However, their lack of offense left them trailing 6-0 at halftime.

When Corey Clement came out and put the Badgers on the board right out of the gate, things looked dire for LSU. Their offense had shown little life, so 13-0 seemed near insurmountable. However, a pick-six and then a touchdown pass in under two minutes put them up 14-13 in the blink of an eye. The game wasn’t over, though.

Despite playing great all game, Les Miles’ defense couldn’t come up with a stop at the most crucial juncture of the game. They allowed Wisconsin to drive down and kick a field goal to take the lead. Needing an offensive drive, the bad version of Harris reappeared. He threw an atrocious interception while driving to effectively end the game and give Wisconsin the upset victory.

Three Stars

Leonard Fournette: Though the LSU star started off slow, he came on strong to do everything in his power. He rushed for 138 yards on 23 carries while also catching three balls for 38 yards.

Troy Fumagalli: He may go unheralded by some, but Wisconsin receiver Troy Fumagalli was huge for the Badgers. He finished the day with seven grabs for 100 yards.

Corey Clement: The running back for the Badgers didn’t have his best day, but came up big several times. Clement finished with 21 carries for 86 yards and a score.
