NFL Rumors: Cowboys to sign Mark Sanchez
The Dallas Cowboys may be signing Mark Sanchez just as quickly as the Denver Broncos released him on Saturday.
Earlier Saturday, the Denver Broncos released quarterback Mark Sanchez. This showed faith in young players Trevor Siemian –the expected starter– and rookie Paxton Lynch. Given Sanchez’s struggles in the preseason after coming over from Philadelphia, interest from other teams could have been low. In the two games the Broncos played him in, he barely threw for 200 yards on 30 pass attempts. The 2009 first round pick didn’t see the field in Weeks 3 and 4.
However, this doesn’t seem to be the case. Just as quickly as the Broncos released Sanchez, the Dallas Cowboys are signing him, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Signing Sanchez is all about adding to the Cowboys’ quarterback depth. They lost Kellen Moore to an injury early in the preseason, and had Tony Romo go down with a broken bone in his back. The former Pro Bowler could miss up to 10 weeks.
These ailments have led to rookie quarterback Dak Prescott taking the starter’s snaps, making him the defacto first-stringer for the 2016 season. He showed promise throughout the preseason, though. The fourth-round pick has thrown for 454 yards, five touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He didn’t play in the fourth game against the Texans.
Barring an injury or horrendous play from Prescott, Sanchez should remain the backup. He’ll provide veteran experience if called upon, and could be an option to keep the offense afloat. Given how Prescott has played, though, it would be surprising to see the former USC standout get called upon soon.

Mark Sanchez going to the Cowboys makes for another interesting move for Jerry Jones’ squad. They never avoid the headlines, with the former “butt fumble” quarterback being the latest one.
