Steve Spurrier is beloved in Gainesville and his legend only grew after hitting Usain Bolt’s “Lightning Bolt” celebration at midfield before kickoff on Saturday.

When you think about the history of Florida football, there’s two names that come to mind: Tim Tebow and Steve Spurrier.

The “Head Ball Coach” and his legacy in Florida includes the Heisman Trophy in 1966, a national title as the head coach of the Gators in 1996 and doing Usain Bolt’s celebration at midfield to kick off Florida’s 2016 season.

No, seriously. He did the “Lightning Bolt” celebration that Bolt has made famous for the last eight years at the Olympics.

If that’s not peak Steve Spurrier, I don’t know what is. That’s fantastic.

There’s not much that you can do in a pregame situation that let Steve Spurrier cook at the 50-yard-line. It’s great to see the HBC having some fun in the place he called home for a long time as a player and as a head coach.

College football feels a little weird on Saturday without Spurrier on the sidelines coaching, but it wouldn’t be “the greatest opening weekend in history” without him in some kind of way. What better place than Gainesville for the HBC to make a cameo?

As for the Gators, they’ll open their season in against UMass on Saturday night. The SEC East is as open as any division in any conference. The Gators aren’t seen as one of the favorites, but the division and the chance to play Alabama (most likely) in the SEC title game is there for the taking.

If the Gators do make the SEC title game in Atlanta a few months from now, the conference has to invite Spurrier back and perform with Future at halftime or something. Spurrier performing at midfield of any game is something that the people need to see.
