DeShone Kizer got Notre Dame right back in the thick of things against Texas with a gorgeous 29-yard touchdown run
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish started Sunday night against the Texas Longhorns playing two quarterbacks. Both DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire were seeing time, as Brian Kelly said he would. However, it was quite clear through the first half that one of the two was superior, at least for the night. Quite simply, Kizer looked like far and away the better overall and more effective quarterback.
Even still, it was Zaire that started the second half for Notre Dame. However, he looked equally as ineffective as he did in the first. Thus, Kelly turned back to Kizer to see if he could give the offense some life. And he undoubtedly did, first with his arm and then with his legs.
After leading a solid drive down the field, Kizer and the Irish were knocking of the door of the red zone. However, he wasn’t interested in just that. Alternatively, he was looking at the end zone. So he did something about it, calling his own number and rolling out to the right side. After slipping one tackler, he then put a nasty hesitation move on another right inside the 10-yard line. That was enough to give him room to cap off the 29-yard touchdown:
Regardless of what Zaire had done in this game, DeShone Kizer has been a monster. It’s only amplified by the fact that Zaire hasn’t exactly been great against the Longhorns.
If that weren’t enough, Kizer helped to cap off the next drive that started soon after thanks to a turnover by Texas. Though things can change weekly in college football, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him be the sole quarterback for Notre Dame at some point this year.
