Texas Longhorns freshman Shane Buechele kept rolling to start the second half vs Notre Dame, dropping a dime to John Burt for a 72-yard touchdown
With starting at quarterback for the Texas Longhorns comes great responsibility. Both Charlie Strong and freshman Shane Buechele knew this when the latter was named the starter against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. And through his first half with the Longhorns, Buechele was already showing that the faith Strong had in him was warranted.
Buechele threw for a touchdown and snuck one in on the ground in the first half. Moreover, he led the way (with the help of senior Tyrone Swoopes) to a 21-14 halftime lead over the Irish. However, he was just getting started. In fact, the youngster had some tricks up his sleeve to start the second half—with the help of speedster receiver John Burt, of course.
In the first half, Buechele or Swoopes couldn’t seem to find Burt. There was a drop, an overthrow, and an underthrow that all could have gone for big plays. Right at the start of the second half, though, Buechele uncorked a massive throw down the right sideline. Burt beat his coverage by a mile and the quarterback dropped a dime right in his hands. It was then off to the races for a 78-yard touchdown, complete with shedding a would-be tackler in the open field:
Everything about that play is gorgeous for the Longhorns. However, the legend of Shane Buechele is just starting to grow. This freshman already seems destined for stardom.
