Florida State Seminoles wide receiver Kermit Whitfield scored on a sweep to give Florida State a 29-28 lead early in the third quarter over Ole Miss.

College football is something else sometimes. The Florida State Seminoles were looking atrocious against the Ole Miss Rebels, down 28-6 late in the second half.

A touchdown pass from quarterback Deondre Francois to wide receiver Travis Rudolph made it 28-13 Rebels at the half, but Florida State was just getting started in its comeback effort.

It took eight minutes and 18 seconds, but the Seminoles were able to erase a 22-point deficit to Ole Miss on a misdirection jet sweep from wide receiver Kermit Whitfield. After Ricky Aguayo’s made point after attempt, Florida State took a one-point lead on the Rebels, 29-28.

This was a well-executed play by the Florida State offense. In his first start under center, Francois faked the handoff to star running back Dalvin Cook in favor of Whitfield coming across on the jet sweep.

Since Ole Miss had to be honest with Heisman hopeful Cook crashing through the tackle box, this allowed Whitfield to scamper into the end zone untouched on a crucial third and two from the Ole Miss two-yard line.

Whitfield didn’t have to reach the end zone to extend the Florida State drive, but the Seminoles were dead set on making a statement to the Rebels in the early part of the second half. It’s a new ball game and Florida State isn’t done just yet.

It’s been pretty spectacular to see the Seminoles right this sinking ship so swiftly after looking all shades of terrible in the first half. Credit has to be given to Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher for this rapid turnaround.
