Loser 1: Oklahoma Sooners (No. 3 to No. 14)

Losing to a ranked team to begin the season doesn’t usually mean a drastic drop for a program fresh off an appearance in the College Football Playoff, but the Oklahoma Sooners are feeling the heat as they were dropped from No. 3 to No. 14 this week. Houston was ranked No. 15, so the upset wasn’t out of the ordinary. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t surprising.

The Sooners didn’t come out ready to play and the Cougars pounced on them for a 33-23 victory at NRG Stadium in Houston — not exactly a “neutral site” game by any means.

Dropping all the way to No. 14 likely means Oklahoma must win out to have a shot at creeping back into the playoff picture. Still, you don’t garner a No. 3 ranking without having some serious talent at your disposal, so don’t count the Sooners out just yet.

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield had a solid game, though, and jumped into the Heisman conversation where he belongs, passing for 323 yards and two touchdowns. The lack of a run game hurt the Sooners, however, and that’s something that’ll absolutely have to change going forward.

Can Bob Stoops’ team bounce back and contend for a national title yet again?
